MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Deposit): GENERALLY NE-DIPPING TRIASSIC TO JURASSIC SEDIMENTARY SECTION IS CUT BY NE-SW-TRENDING PYROXENE LAMPROPHYRE DIKE AND BY GENERALLY NORTH-SOUTH-AND NE-SW-TRENDING FAULTS. MINE IS LOCATED ON DIKE NEAR CONTACT BETWEEN ENTRADA SANDSTONE AND PONY EXPRESS LIMESTONE MEMBER OF WANAKAH FM. IF DEPOSIT IS SIMILAR TO THAT AT GRAYSILL MINE 4 MILES TO SE (SAN JUAN CO.), ROSCOELITE ORE AND POSSIBLY CARNOTITE ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CARBON TRASH IN ENTRADA SANDSTONE. MINERALIZATION MAY HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY PROXIMITY TO SILLS AND DIKES AROUND FLATTOP MOUNTAIN AND HERMOSA PEAK.

Comment (Workings): BARLOW GROUP WORKINGS CONSIST OF THREE TUNNELS PROBABLY DRIVEN SOUTH OR SW FOR 30 FT, 75 FT, AND 190 FT.

Comment (Location): (LAND STATUS AND ADMINISTRATIVE AREA LOCATIONS CALCULATED USING GIS OVERLAY ANALYSIS FOR SAN JUAN N. F.). NELSON-MOORE AND OTHERS (1978) GIVE LOCATION AS SEC. 15, BUT BLM SMM BASE MAP AND MINE LOCATION ON TOPO SHEET SUGGEST LOCATION IN SEC.15 (UNSURVEYED). SAME LOCATION AS OR CLOSE TO SOUTH BARLOW MINE. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :1975

Comment (Development): PROPERTY PROSPECTED SINCE ABOUT 1940 AND PRODUCED VANADIUM ORE AT LEAST AS EARLY AS 1943. OPERATED IN 1943-1944 BY LOUIS AND J.G. DUNNING, IN 1950 BY MINERALS ENGINEERING CO., AND FROM 1959 TO 1967 BY VANADIUM CORPORATION OF AMERICA, WHICH CONDUCTED SURFACE AND UNDERGROUND EXPLORATION, DRILLING, AND ASSESSMENT.
