Comments

Comment (Workings): MINE DEVELOPED BY 1500-FT CROSSCUT TUNNEL DRIVEN (PRESUMABLY) NW, WITH 500-FT RAISE TO SURFACE. SIX LEVELS DEVELOPED TO NE ON VEIN OFF RAISE AND MAIN 75-DEG INCLINED SHAFT. LEVEL 1 (LOWER), 1000-FT DRIFT; LEVEL 2, 1000-FT DRIFT; LEVEL 3, 200-FT DRIFT; LEVEL 4, 400-FT DRIFT; LEVEL 5, 1000-FT DRIFT; LEVEL 6, EXTENT UNKNOWN. LEVEL 6 IS 300 FT BELOW SURFACE, AND LEVEL 5 IS 400 FT BELOW SURFACE. LEVELS 1-4 DRIVEN OVER 480-FT VERTICAL INTERVAL BELOW LEVEL 5. IRVING AND BANCROFT (1911) MENTION UPPER, SHORTER CROSSCUT DRIVEN N 43 W FOR 200 FT. DISCOVERY SHAFTS LOCATED 450 AND 1100 FT NE OF MAIN SHAFT. BALTIMORE SHAFT LOCATED 1900 FT NE OF MAIN SHAFT. MINE WAS CONNECTED VIA WIRE-ROPE TRAMWAY TO WHITNEY (RED ROVER) MILL ON HENSON CREEK.

Comment (Location): MINE LOCATED NORTH OF HENSON CREEK ALONG UNNAMED GULCH DIRECTLY ACROSS VALLEY FROM BIG CASINO GULCH. ELEV AND LAT-LONG GIVEN ARE FOR MAIN SHAFT NEAR UPPER TUNNEL LEVEL. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :1977

Comment (Deposit): DEPOSIT LIES JUST OUTSIDE NORTH RIM OF LAKE CITY CALDERA IN UNCOMPAHGRE CALDERA INFILL ROCKS CONSISTING OF EUREKA MEMBER RHYOLITE AND PICAYUNE MEGABRECCIA, COMPOSED OF CHAOTIC MASSES OF PRECALDERA INTERMEDIATE-COMPOSITION ROCKS INTERPRETED TO BE RESULT OF SLUMPING FROM OVERSTEEPENED CALDERA WALLS DURING INITIAL SUBSIDENCE OF UNCOMPAHGRE CALDERA. DEPOSIT IS TRANSVERSE VEIN IN SLACK'S (1980) QUARTZ/BASE-METAL ASSEMBLAGE, MIDDLE HYBRID ZONE. IN UPPER WORKINGS, VEIN DIPS 60 NW AND HAS FAIRLY WELL DEFINED WALLS WITH LITTLE OR NO CLAY SELVAGE. IN LOWER WORKINGS, VEIN DIPS CLOSER TO STRATIFICATION IN BRECCIA (ABOUT 45 NW) AND SPLITS INTO MANY PARALLEL AND INTERSECTING STRINGERS SEPARATED BY IRREGULAR SHEETS OF COUNTRY ROCK. WHERE VEINS RUN ALONG BRECCIA LAYERS, DEPOSIT APPEARS TO BE MORE OF REPLACEMENT TYPE. ORE SHOOTS PITCHED 30 NE ALONG STRIKE OF VEIN AND ARE SEPARATED BY GANGUE AND LESS ABUNDANT ORE.

Comment (Production): PARTIAL PRODUCTION RECORD. MINE REPORTEDLY PRODUCED IN 1906 AND 1907, BUT FIGURES FOR THESE YEARS AND OTHER PRIOR YEARS ARE UNAVAILABLE. NO PRODUCTION REPORTED IN 1920-1923.
