Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Location): Saratoga area is divided into a northern and a southern area. Also see 10018824 for description of southern part.

Comment (General): Short description of this area on p. 54 of MINOBRAS, 1976: "Carnotite was first found in [T16N, R84W, Sec. 13, 14[ during 1953. This location and subsequent discoveries are from 5 to 7 miles south of Saratoga [...]. It has been found as coatings on boulders and cobbles, within piedmont gravels and in the underlying silicified masses." "The uranium mineralization probably resulted from ground-water migration. In grade, the uranium reported in the gravels was about 0.011% U3O8. The maximum concentration of 0.027% U3O8, was found in thin cherty and silicified masses." (It is not clear if the latter part about the grade pertains to the northern or southern area. See also 10018824.)

Comment (Deposit): Deposits classified as "desert evaporite" type (see Gregory and others, 2010, MS-94).

Comment (Production): There are no known productive mines in this northern area.

Comment (Deposit): From TEI-440, p. 179: " North of Saratoga, approximately in sections 15 and 22, T18N, R84W, a yellow uranium mineral reported to be carnotite occurs in the Browns Fork formation. At this locality, more than 300 feet of the formation is exposed. It consistes of light brown to gray fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone, interbedded with thin but persistent white limestone containing abundant black chalcedony. Uranium minerals coat fractures in the thick sandstone forming a prominent cliff on the north side of the North Platte River, in carbonaceous shale about 50 feet above the cliff-forming standstone, and in a white chalcedonic limestone. In every observed occurrence, the mineral does not appear to have penetrated the rock except along fractures."
