Comment (Geology): GEOL.DESC: 3 PRINCIPAL MAPPABLE UNITS UNDERLIE AREA: (1) PERIDOTITE, MAINLY SERPENTINIZED OLIVINE AND ENSTATITE, (2) QUARTZ DIORITE, AND (3) LAYERED BENTONITIC CLAYSAND SANDSTONE OF MARINE MIOCENE IMPERIAL FORMATION. SERPENTINIZED PERIDOTITE AND QUARTZ DIORITE WERE INTRUDED BY SIMPLE PEGMATITE BODIES. 3 FAULTS WHICH MAY HAVE LOCALIZED NICKEL MINERALIZATION OCCUR IN AREA, AND FORM BOUNDARIES BETWEEN 3 UNITS. NICKEL OCCURS IN BASIC INTRUSIVE PERIDOTITES WHICH INTRUDE INTO METASEDIMENTARY ROCKS. FRACTURES AND NEARLY VERTICAL FAULTS IN PERIDOTITES ARE LOCI OF ACCUMULATION OF SECONDARY IRON MINERALS, AND SOME PALE BLUE SECONDARY NICKEL MINERALS INCLUDING GARNIERITE AND MORENOSITE. METASEDIMENTS OCCUR ALONG N.E. SIDE OF ELSMORE FAULT ZONE FOR ABOUT 9 MI. IN COYOTE MTNS. PERIDOTITE IN MINERALIZED ZONE IS HIGHLY ALTERED.
