Comment (Workings): MANY PITS

Comment (Deposit): 160 ACRES OF PLACER GRAVELS. PLACER GOLD WAS DISCOVERED IN THE AREA BY F.G. WENDELL IN 1893. CINNABAR WAS NOTED IN EARLY PLACER OPERATIONS, BUT NOT DISCOVERED IN PLACE UNTIL 1939 AT SITE OF DUTCH FLAT LODE MINE. THE 11 PLACER CLAIMS WERE ORIGINALLY OWNED BY FG. WENDEL. IN 1904 THE DUTCH FLAT MINING CO. BEGAN WORKING THE PLACERS WITH POWER EQUIPMENT WITH LITTLE SUCCESS DUE TO A LACK OF ADEQUATE WATER. IN 1909 AND 1910, THE GROUND WAS LEASED TO CHINESE PLACER MINERS. LATER OPERATIONSWERE LIMITED TO SMALL SCALE ACTIVITY BY WENDEL OR LESSES. OVER 100 PITS HAVE BEEN SUNK IN THE ALLUVIAL MATERIAL ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT; 2 UNPUB REPT; 3 FIELD OBSERV
