Comment (Deposit): THE MASSIVE LENTICULAR MANGANESE DEPOSITS ARE SYNGENETIC DEPOSITS CONTAINED IN THE CHERT, ARGILLITE AND GREENSTONES OF THE PUMPERNICKEL FORMATION. BRAUNITE IS INTERGROWN WITH CHALCEDONY. NEAR THE SURFACE MANGANESE OXIDES ARE INTIMATELY ASSOCIATED WITH SILICEOUS GANGUE. THE NORTHWEST DEPOSIT IS ALSO VENTICULAR AND CONSISTS OF TWO LENSES ROUGHLY 40 X 270 FT AND 20 X 140 FT. RED JASPER OCCURS NEAR THE TOP OF THE MANGANESE ORE, AS LENSES WITHIN IT, AND A THICK SECTION APPEARS TO UNDERLIE- ORE. A SMALL AMOUNT OF WHITE TO CLEAR CHALCEDONIC SILICA OCCU-RS AS VEINLETS CUTTING JASPER AND MN OXIDES.

Comment (Deposit): BLACK DIABLO MINE PRODUCED MOST OF THE MANGANESE MINED IN PERSHING COUNTY BETWEEN 1929 & 1954. THE MAIN DEPOSIT WAS LENTICULAR & MASSIVE, 520 FT. LONG, 160 FT. WIDE AT CENTER & 6 TO 10 FT. WIDE AT BOTH ENDS AND 60 FT. VERTICALLY UNDER THE SURFACE. IT WAS MINED BY OPEN-PIT METHODS, WHERE ALL PRODUCTION CAME FROM. A SMALLER SECOND DEPOSIT OCCURS TO THE NORTHWEST. BOTH DEPOSITS PARALLEL THE BEDDING IN THE PUMPERNICKEL FORMATION. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT
