Pumpkin Hollow Copper Project

The Pumpkin Hollow Copper Project is a copper mine located in Lyon county, Nevada.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Commodity): Ore Materials: chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite, bornite, chalcocite, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, covellite, native copper

Comment (Commodity): Gangue Materials: garnet, epidote, wollastonite, quartz, calcite, pyroxene

Comment (Economic Factors): Preliminary resource estimates, based on 358 holes drilled by Cyprus are: 138 million tons grading 0.71% copper, 27% magnetite, and 0.001 opt gold in the North Porphyry; 203 million tons grading 0.36% copper, 31% magnetite, and 0.001 opt gold in the South Porphyry; 3 million tons grading 3.35% copper in the Northwest Zone skarn; 7.1 million tons grading 3.35% copper, 23.6% magnetite, and 0.01 opt gold in the East skarn; 2 million tons grading 3.6% copper, 27.9% magnetite, and 0.02 opt gold in the E-2 skarn. The property has not been mined. In 2006, Nevada Copper Corp. (100% owner) reported that Pumpkin Hollow contains measured and indicated Resources totaling 2.7 Billion pounds of copper plus additional Inferred Resources of 3.4 billion pounds of copper (all using a 0.2% copper cutoff grade). This 6 billion pound copper and associated 75 million ton iron resource was estimated in July, 2006.

Comment (Location): 5,240-acre property

Comment (Workings): drilling

Comment (Deposit): Described by some as? western North America's largest undeveloped copper-gold-magnetite iron deposit. ? Mineralization at the Lyon deposit is in six zones: the North and South porphyries, and the Northwest, East, E-2, and Southwest skarns. In the early 1960s, a regional air magnetics survey first identified the large buried copper-iron skarn deposit. Subsequent drilling of the targets identified seven magnetite-salite skarn zones all of which have adjacent and over-printed copper mineralized zones. Metasomatizing hydrothermal fluids emanating from Jurassic age plutons formed exoskarns in surrounding Triassic limestones and limey clastic rocks. First to form were hydrothermal dolomirte and garnet skarnoid rock, subsequently partially replaced by anhydrous salite-magnetite skarn. Iron-depleting skarn formation in the granitic rocks was roughly contemporaneous with the formation of the exoskarn and was probably the source fo the iron to form the magnetite-salite exoskarn. As the period of anhydrous skarn formation waned, hydrous retrograde skarn alteration consisting of calcite, talc, chlorite, amphibole took over, affecting both the exoskarn and endoskarn. Sulfides, including chalcopyrite, were emplaced during this period of hydrous retrograde thermal metamorphism. Later Mesozoic tectonism rotated the mineralized zone about 40 degrees to the west along a N20W horizontal axis. Tertiary tectonism again rotated both the Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks another 70 degrees west in conjuncton with listric faulting. The listric faulting has sliced and separated teh skarn deposit into as many as 5 structural blocks.

Comment (Development): In the early 1960s, a regional air magnetics survey first identified the large buried copper-iron skarn deposit. Subsequent drilling of the targets by Cyprus identified seven magnetite-salite skarn zones all of which have adjacent and over-printed copper mineralized zones. Metasomatizing hydrothermal fluids emanating from Jurassic age plutons formed exoskarns in surrounding Triassic limestones and limey clastic rocks. The property was owned by Conoco in 1982. In 1998, International Taurus Resources acquired the Lyon copper-magnetite property from Cyprus Metals Exploration. A due diligence field program was planned to test gold content of the copper mineralization as well as determine the engineering parameters required for an underground mining operation at the Lyon site. Mineralization at the Lyon deposit is in six zones: the North and South porphyries, and the Northwest, East, E-2, and Southwest skarns. Preliminary resource estimates, based on 358 holes drilled by Cyprus are: 138 million tons grading 0.71% copper, 27% magnetite, and 0.001 opt gold in the North Porphyry; 203 million tons grading 0.36% copper, 31% magnetite, and 0.001 opt gold in the South Porphyry; 3 million tons grading 3.35% copper in the Northwest Zone skarn; 7.1 million tons grading 3.35% copper, 23.6% magnetite, and 0.01 opt gold in the East skarn; 2 million tons grading 3.6% copper, 27.9% magnetite, and 0.02 opt gold in the E-2 skarn. In 2006, Nevada Copper Corp owned the property 100% and reported that Pumpkin Hollow contains measured and indicated Resources totaling 2.7 Billion pounds of Copper plus additional Inferred Resources of 3.4 Billion pounds of Copper (all using a 0.2% copper cutoff grade). This 6 Billion pound copper and associated 75 million ton iron resource was estimated in July, 2006, and the Technical Report is available on the Resource page of this website and at www.sedar.com. Historical work at the Pumpkin Hollow property includes over 590,000 feet of drilling conducted by U.S. Steel Corp., Anaconda Copper Corp. and Cyprus Minerals Corp. among others. These were among the largest mining companies in the world at the time. Numerous resource, metallurgical and economic studies have been completed over the years. The Company intends to move the property forward through feasibility, and is confident that at current metals prices, the Pumpkin Hollow Copper property will soon host Nevada's Next Copper Mine

Nevada Gold

Gold Districts of Nevada

Nevada has a total of 368 distinct gold districts. Of the of those, just 36 are major producers with production and/or reserves of over 1,000,000 ounces, 49 have production and/or reserves of over 100,000 ounces, with the rest having less than 100,000 ounces. Read more: Gold Districts of Nevada.
