Some gold was recovered at one time from Grapevine Canyon, which is in the north end of the Grapevine Mountains in eastern Inyo County and is part of Death Valley National Monument. Several gold-quartz veins occur in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. Scotty's Castle, for many years the home of Death Valley Scotty and now a well-known tourist attraction, is located in Grapevine Canyon.
