Photo Description
Gold was first discovered in the Georgetown district in 1859 by two brothers, George and David Griffith. While efforts to exploit the area for gold were short-lived, silver assaying up to 1,000 ounces per ton was discovered in 1864. Mining continued until the decline of silver prices in the 1890's.
