Small amounts of gold are recovered intermittently from the lower Fresno River in western Madera County. There are several small floating suction dredges similar to those on the Chowchilla River to the north (see also the section on the Chowchilla district). This stream was first placer-mined during the gold rush, when the Coarsegold and Grub Gulch districts to the northeast were originally worked.
