Placer gold has been recovered in a number of canyons and washes along the south flank of the San Gabriel Mountains north and east of Los Angeles. Two of the most important sources have been San Gabriel Canyon, near Azusa, and Tujunga Canyon to the west. At the present time, some gold is recovered as a by-product in several sand and gravel plants in this area. The placer gold usually is fine. There are several narrow gold-quartz veins just to the north.
