MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments
Comment (Production): TOTAL PRODUCTION FROM 1917 TO 1960 INCLUDES CASELTON MINE AND NO. 1 EXACT TOTAL PRODUCTION UNKNOWN.
Comment (Deposit): THE COMPLEX SULFIDE ORE WAS OF NO VALUE UNTIL SELECTIVE FLOTATION WAS INVENTED. THE MAIN OREBODY IS THE RESULT OF SELECTED REPLACEMENT OF THE COMBINED METALS LIMESTONE ONLY WHERE THE LIMESTONE IS INTERSECTED BY A STEEPLY-DIPPING FISSURE (THE GREENDWOOD FISSURE). ORE HAS BEEN OFFSET BY MANY CROSS-FAULTS. THE GREENWOOD FISSURE IS A FAULT OF SLIGHT DISPLACEMENT, USUALLY EXPRESSED AS A THIN GOUGE SEAM BUT MAY BE UP TO 5 FT THICK. IT TRENDS N70E, DIPS 65-70N, NEARLY PARALLELLING THE RAYMOND AND ELY VEIN, WHICH DIPS 75S. THE MAIN OREBODY IN THE NO. 1 MINE IS A TABULAR MASS OF SULFIDES EXTENDING LATERALLY INTO THE LIMESTONE LAYER, THICKEST (30-40 FT) ADJACENT TO THE GREENWOOD FISSURE, AND TAPERING DOWN AWAY FROM IT. ORE OF THE UPPER BED PRESERVES THE NODULAR CHARACTER OF THE LIMESTONE HOST. ORE IS MASSIVE SULFIDE CONSISTING OF ABOUT 60% PYRITE, 22% SPHALERITE, 8% GALENA, MINOR CHALCOPYRITE AND PRACTICALLY NO GANGUE MINERALS. LOWER BED ORE IS MASSIVE WITH AN IRREGULAR BOTTOM CONTACT, AS THE
Comment (Deposit): UNDERLYING QUARTZITE HAS BEEN IRREGULARLY REPLACED BY PYRITE AND SPHALERITE. ORE IS UNOXIDIZED. THE RAYMOND AND ELY VEIN SYSTEM CONTAINING HIGH-GRADE PB-AG ORE MINED IN THE 1870'S, SPLITS EASTWARD INTO TWO BRANCHES: THE MEADOW VALLEY VEIN AND THE BURKE VEIN. THE LARGEST AND RICHEST ORE SHOOT OCCURRED IN THE RAYMOND AND ELY VEIN JUST BELOW THE PIOCHE SHALE WITHIN ABOUT 400 FT OF THE YUBA DIKE.
Comment (Commodity): THE ORE MINED WAS OF VERY CONSTANT COMPOSITION.
Comment (Development): MOST PRODUCTIVE MINE IN PIOCHE DISTRICT. CMRC BUILT MILL AT BAUER UTAH IN 1923 TO MILL THE ORE UNTIL THE CASELTON MILL WAS BUILT IN 1941. IN 1958 AND 1959, THE YZ MINE, OPERATING THROUGH THE NO 1 SHAFT, WAS THE MAIN PRODUCING MINE IN THE DISTRICT, PRODUCING ORE FROM SILVER VEINS IN THE QUARTZITE.
Comment (Geology): BEDDED ORE 200 FT. ON EITHER SIDE OF THE GREENWOOD FISSURE; RAYMOND AND ELY VEIN IN THE PROSPECT MOUNTAIN QUARTZITE STRIKE PARALLEL TO THE GREENWOOD FISSURE; GREENWOOD ORE CHIEFLY IN PIOCHE SHALE. THE BLACK LEDGE VEIN, OF QUARTZ AND SPHALERITE, ALSO MINED, WITH 12-20% ZN AND 5-21 OZ AG/TN. ARENACEOUS SHALE WITH ABUNDANT MUSCOVITE. COMBINED METALS MEMBER OF THE PIOCHE SHALE IS THE HOST ROCK FOR THE REPLACEMENT OREBODIES. IT CONSISTS OF 3 PARTS: (1) A LOWER 3 FT OF MASSIVE LIMESTONE (2) A MIDDLE 3-FT THICK CALCAREOUS SANDSTONE (WHICH IN THE OREBODY IS UNREPLACED) AND (3) AN UPPER 30-FT LAYER OF THIN-BEDDED NODULAR LIMESTONES, USUALLY ONLY 2-3 INCHES THICK AND SO NODULAR THAT THEY LOOK LIKE "BEDS OF FLATTENED POTATOES". THE NODULES ARE COATED WITH A THIN BLACK CARBONACEOUS SKIN. THE PIOCHE SHALE BELT TRENDS NW BETWEEN 2 FAULTS.

Nevada Gold
Nevada has a total of 368 distinct gold districts. Of the of those, just 36 are major producers with production and/or reserves of over 1,000,000 ounces, 49 have production and/or reserves of over 100,000 ounces, with the rest having less than 100,000 ounces. Read more: Gold Districts of Nevada.
