Carbonado Description

Carbonado served as an important coal mining community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the town operated the largest coal mine in Pierce County. The worst coal mining disaster in Washington occurred here in 1899, when an explosion in the Carbon Hill coal mine killed thirty-two miners.
