This district is on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada in western Mono County about 10 miles northwest of Mono Lake and just north of the Jordan district. The principal source of gold apparently has been the Dunderberg mine, which was first worked in the 1860s and has been intermittently prospected since. There are several quartz-barite veins with minor amounts of free gold' and abundant pyrite. Country rock is granite, quartzite, hornfels, and schist.
