Photo Description
This building, built in stages starting in 1959, is one of Californias oldest and best preserved Gold Rush era buildings. The building - with 22 inch thick walls - is built against the hillside and connects at the back with an old mine shaft. The shaft remains cool year round, and was used to store ice for the soda works that originally occupied the building.
Today, the building is home to the Cozmic Cafe and the mine shaft is lighted and contains seating for the cafe. This is the most interesting and historic cafe I have ever visited! The food and friendly people at the cafe are also worth a visit.
