This is a small Sierra Nevada east gold belt district in south-central Tuolumne County. It is west of Yosemite National Park on the Big Oak Flat road and two miles east of the town of Hardin Flat. The town was named for "Little Johnny Hardin", an eccentric Englishman who once owned a sawmill here. There are a number of small prospects that are intermittently worked, mostly by weekend prospectors.
The principal rock in the area is granodiorite that is cut by narrow aplitic dikes. There are a number of narrow quartz veins that in places have yielded smal! but rich pockets of gold near the surface. Some sulfides are present.
