Adams County adjoins Denver County on the northeast, a few miles east of the Front Range. All the gold mined in the county has come from placers along Clear Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River. The first record of production was in 1922, and since then the placers have yielded consistent, though small, amounts of gold as a byproduct of sand-and-gravel operations. Total production from 1922 through 1959 was about 16,800 ounces.
