Liberty

The Liberty is a gold and silver mine located in Alaska.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Workings): Workings / Exploration = Surface trenching and pitting. Samples from trenches and pits contain 0.06-0.14 ounce of gold per ton and 1.2-8.6 ounces of silver per ton (Ross, 1933). Hawley and others (1978) report values of 0.005 to 0.06 ounce of gold per ton and traces of silver in samples from the same trenches sampled by Ross (1933).

Comment (Deposit): Model Name = Low-sulfide Au-quartz vein (Cox and Singer, 1987; model 36a)

Comment (Geology): Geologic Description = Thick Quaternary glacial deposits and Upper Tertiary sedimentary cover the older rocks in this area, which consist of Upper Jurassic to Upper Triassic(?) crystal tuff, argillite, chert, graywacke, and limestone. The older rocks are intruded by Late Cretaceous quartz diorite dikes, mainly along the nearby Chulitna fault (Wilson and others, 1998). The Liberty deposit consists of arsenopyrite-bearing quartz veins, reportedly in silicified limestone.

Comment (Exploration): Status = Inactive

Comment (Reference): Primary Reference = Hawley and Clark, 1974

Comment (Geology): Age = Probably Late Cretaceous (70-65 Ma) or younger, assuming deposit is related to the diorite dikes.
