Comment (Geology): Geologic Description = Most of Portage Creek drains Miocene to Pliocene Nenana Gravel and Eocene coal-bearing strata. The Nenana Gravel consists of poorly-consolidated, buff to reddish-brown, fluvial conglomerate and coarse grained sandstone interbedded with mudflow deposits and thin lignite beds (Wilson and others, 1998). The placer gold in Portage Creek probably was derived from small gold paleoplacers in the Nenana Gravel.
