MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Exploration): Status = Inactive

Comment (Workings): Workings / Exploration = A dredge operated at Van Curlers Bar, and hydraulic methods have been used. Mining activity was reported in 1912, 1921, and 1927 to 1940, and there was various mining and/or prospecting up to 1981 (Menzie and others, 1983).

Comment (Deposit): Model Name = Placer gold deposit (Cox and Singer, 1986; model 39a)

Comment (Geology): Geologic Description = The bedrock immediately beneath the Van Curlers Bar is described by Foster and others (1983) as phyllite, calcareous phyllite and marble. The headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Chena River, however, are underlain by pelitic schist. Placer gold mining activity was reported in 1912, 1921, and 1927 to 1940, and various mining and/or prospecting occurred up to 1981 (Menzie and others, 1983). A small dredge operation resulted in moderate production for many years prior to 1963, but details are lacking (Cobb, 1973, p. 129, [B 1374]).

Comment (Reference): Primary Reference = Menzie and others, 1983.

Comment (Production): Production Notes = A small dredge operation resulted in moderate production for many years prior to 1963, but details are lacking (Cobb, 1973, p. 129, [B 1374]).
