Old Harbor

The Old Harbor is a copper mine located in Alaska.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Deposit): Other Comments = Site is on land conveyed to the Koniag Corporation.

Comment (Reference): Primary Reference = Berg and Cobb, 1967

Comment (Workings): Workings / Exploration = Assays range from 0.09 percent copper in disseminated material to 5.52 percent copper in one chalcopyrite-rich mass. The shear zone was prospected by 3 short adits prior to WW II.

Comment (Exploration): Status = Inactive

Comment (Deposit): Model Name = Shear zone with minor copper values.

Comment (Geology): Geologic Description = A sulfide-bearing shear zone is present along a footwall contact between a gabbro sill and Cretaceous metasedimentary rock. The shear zone is 10 to 20 feet in width and extends for approximately 2500 feet. Pyrite, pyrrhotite, and sparse chalcopyrite are disseminated in the shear zone. In addition, several sulfide masses containing abundant chalcopyrite occur about 1250 feet apart. Assays range from 0.9 percent copper in the disseminated mineralization to 5.52 percent in the chalcopyrite-rich zones (Berg and Cobb, 1967, p. 87).

Comment (Geology): Age = Cretaceous or younger
