The Long Creek Placer is a gold mine located in Alaska.
About the MRDS Data:
All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.
Mine Info
Satelite View
MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments
Comment (Deposit): THIS SITE NAME WAS CREATED BY THE REPORTER OR OTHER USGS EMPLOYEE BASED ON PROXIMITY TO SOME MAJOR GEOGRAPHIC FEATURE.
Comment (Deposit): STREAM GRADIENT UNDER 50 FT. PER MILE. CREEK NEARLY WORKED OUT; SOME PERIPHERAL PLACERS MAY REMAIN. ENTIRE CREEK PROBABLY HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY PROSPECTED. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT; 2 UNPUB REPT
Comment (Geology): VALLEY OF LONG CR. IS ASYMMETRIC, HAVING A FAIRLY STEEP SLOPE ON ITS WEST SIDE AND A GENTLE SLOPE ON ITS EAST SIDE; DEPTH OF VALLEY BELOW RIDGES ON BOTH SIDES ABOUT 1,000 FT. BEDROCK VALLEY FLOOR BELOW MOUTH OF BEAR GULCH NEARLY FLAT IN CROSS SECTION; SLOPES DOWNSTREAM MORE STEEPLY THAN PRESENT VALLEY. GRANITE IN DIVIDE BETWEEN LONG AND FLINT CREEK. AT TOWN OF LONG, STREAM CHANGES COURSE FROM S 60 E TO S 40 W. ; MAJOR.UNITS: BEDROCK MAINLY CHERTY SILICEOUS ROCK WITH TALCOSE LAYERS; SOME GREENSTONE; BEDROCK MUCH JOINTED. ; REG.COM: LODE SOURCE OF GOLD E AND SE OF CREEK. PAY STREAK ENRICHED BY ACCRETION OF GOLD FROM SMALL EASTERN TRIBUTARIES.
Comment (Deposit): GOLD FOUND IN BASE OF GRAVEL, ON BEDROCK, AND IN POCKETS OR CREVICES IN THE TOP 2-3 FT. OF DECOMPOSED BEDROCK. GOLD ALSO FOUND ON CLAY FALSE BEDROCK 2-3 FT. ABOVE THE TRUE BEDROCK; WHERE GOLD WAS FOUND ON SUCH CLAY BEDS LITTLE OR NO GOLD WAS FOUND ON THE TRUE BEDROCK BELOW. ALL GOLD IN BENCH PLACERS EAST OF CREEK ABOVE LONG AND SE OF CREEK BELOW LONG; NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PAY STREAK AND PRESENT COURSE OF CREEK. PAY STREAK DISCONTINUOUS; PAY STREAK AT LEAST 6.5 MILES LONG AND 100 FT. WIDE; ALLUVIUM 20-80 FEET THICK. DEPTH TO BEDROCK NEAR MOUTH OF BEAR GULCH IS 40-50 FT.; PAY STREAK THOUGHT TO BE CONTINUOUS BELOW MOUTH AND DISCONTINUOUS ABOVE.
Comment (Workings): SEVERAL SHAFTS SUNK TO BEDROCK FOR DRIFT MINING. SOME OF DEEPER GROUND NOT FROZEN, SO WATER IS A PROBLEM IN MINING.
Comment (Location): USGS MF-405, LOC. 13. PLACER MINE MARKED ON RUBY (B-5, 6). COORDINATES GIVEN FOR PLACER MINE MARKED AT MOUTH OF SNOW GULCH. LAND STATUS VALUE CALCULATED 6-94 USING GIS OVERLAY ANALYSIS WITH BLM 1:2,500,000 SCALE OWNERSHIP STATUS MAP (1991).
Comment (Development): GOLD DISCOVERED, 1910; ALMOST CONTINUOUS MINING (INCLUDING REWORKING OF OLD TAILINGS) THROUGH 1977. EARLY WORK ALL DRIFT MINING. ALL WORK SINCE 1940 OPEN-CUT MINING. MINED IN 1975 BY DRAGLINE AND BULLDOZER.
