Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Commodity): THE HECTORITE IS SNOWY WHITE AND WAXY IN APPEARANCE.

Comment (Deposit): VITRIC TUFF BEDS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO HIGH LITHIUM MONTMORILLONITE IN A LACUSTRINE ENVIRONMENT. THE TUFF BEDS WERE DEPOSITED IN AND ALONG A TRAVERTINE RIDGE CREST AND IN THE NORTHWEST TRENDING SAHLLOW TROUGH PARALLEL WITH A FAULT-TERRACE SHORELINE BORDERING THE LAKE TO THE NORTHEAST. NORTHEAST AND ADJACENT TO THE DEPOSIT, SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF COLEMANITE EXIST AT DEPTH IN A SECTION OF ANHYDRITE, CLAY, AND CALCITE. FAULTING ALONG A MAJOR NORTHWEST-TRENDING STRIKE-SLIP FAULT (TO THE SOUTHWEST) LEAD TO PARTIAL EROSION OF OVERLYING CLAY- AND MUDSTONES. A RECENT OLIVINE BASALT FLOW PARALLELS THE TRAVERTINE RIDGE AND FILLS A FAULT ZONE TROUGH FOR ALMOST 7 MILES; THE HECTORITE DEPOSIT IS LARGELY COVERED BY THIS BASALT. UP TO 8 COLEMANITE HORIZONS INTERSECTED IN HECTOR NO3 (MARSDEN, 1970). MOST HORIZONS ARE LESS THAN 2 FT THICK ONE HORIZON APPROX. 5FT THICK. COLEMANITE OCCURS WITH GYPSIFEROUS BEDS.

Comment (Location): IN MOJAVE DESERT NEAR HECTOR, CALIF. BARSTOW AREA.

Comment (Production): NO BORON PRODUCTION.

Comment (Development): USGS DRILLED 3 HOLES AROUND HECTOR. ONE HOLE INTERSECTED BORATES AT A DEPTH OF 1350 FT. ; ECON.COM: ADJACENT TO INTERSTATE.

Comment (Deposit): THIS RECORD CONTAINS DATA FROM DUPLICATE RECORD RL10056 OF R.P. LANGFORD WHICH HAS BEEN DELETED FROM MAIN MRDS.
