Mine Info
Satelite View
MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments
Comment (Workings): OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND WORKINGS.
Comment (Production): A FEW POCKETS PRIOR TO 1894. WORKED DURING WWI; IDLE 1918--1936; WORKED 1936-39, 1940-42; 1944-45. UP TO 1945 THESE DEPOSITS HAD YIELDED A TOTAL OF 27,144 LONG TONS OF CHROMITE. LITTLE ORE PRODUCED 1941-53, SOME PRODUCTION 1954-55, BUT IDLE SINCE THAT TIME.
Comment (Deposit): WORKINGS ARE PROBABLY THOSE SHOWN AT THE ABOVE LOCATIONS ON USGS QUAD. PILOT HILL, CALIF. 1954. THERE ARE ELEVEN SEPARATE CHROMITE BEARING AREAS IN THIS DEPOSIT. BECAUSE OF THE IRREGULAR SHAPE AND ERRATIC DISTRIBUTION OF THE ORE BODIES, POTENTIAL RESERVES ARE UNKNOWN. MINE CONTAINS LARGEST KNOWN CHROMITE DEPOSITS IN THE SIERRA NEVADA.
