MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Land Status

Land ownership: BLM Administrative Area
Note: the land ownership field only identifies whether the area the mine is in is generally on public lands like Forest Service or BLM land, or if it is in an area that is generally private property. It does not definitively identify property status, nor does it indicate claim status or whether an area is open to prospecting. Always respect private property.

Comments

Comment (Deposit): ALTERED VOLCANICS AND QUARTZ-VEIN BRECCIA OUTCROPS ARE FRACTURED AND SHEARED PARALLEL TO N20-40W ORIENTATION. FRACTURE PLANES ARE VERTICAL TO STEEPLY SW-DIPPING AND COMMONLY COATED BY FE AND MN OXIDES. THE ALTERED VOLCANICS ARE CUT BY A NETWORK OF CROSSCUTTING, VITREOUS TO SUGARY QUARTZ VEINLETS, SOME CONTAINING OXIDEZED PYRITE, CHALCOPYRITE, COVELLITE, TETRAHEDRITE, CU OXIDES AND STREAKS OF VERY FINELY CRYSTALLINE SULFIDES. THE PENNSYLVANIA VEIN IS ACTUALLY A ZONE OF QUARTZ VEINING OR MULTIPLE VEIN SYSTEM WHICH CEMENTS AN ANDESITE BRECCIA. THE EXPLORED WIDTH OF THE "VEIN" IS ABOUT 6-10 FT. THE QUARTZ CEMENTING THE BRECCIA FRAGMENTS IS SUGARY, WHITE TO VITREOUS GREY. MANY OF THE VEINS ARE FISSURE-TYPE, COMPOSED OF BANDS OF FINELY CRYSTALLINE OR CHALCEDONIC QUARTZ WITH OPEN DRUSY QUARTZ-ENCRUSTED CENTERS. THE QUARTZ CARRIES THE MINERALS MENTIONED ABOVE AND ENCLOSES ALTERED ANDESITE AND POSSIBLY SOME SEDIMEN TARY FRAGMENTS. SOME OF THE FRAGMENTS ARE MINERALIZED, CONTAINING PYRITE,

Comment (Location): UTM IS TO CENTRAL PART OF AREA COVERED BY THESE CLAIMS. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :(1972)

Comment (Production): PRODUCTION INCLUDED IN CHIEF AND DELAMAR DISTRICT

Comment (Development): AREA IS STAKED AND THERE IS RECENT SURFACE EXPLORATION AT AND ADJACENT TO THE MINESITES (1983). EARLY EXPLORATION WAS FOR AG. U. S. GOVERNMENT EXPLORED IT FOR CU IN 1943, DRIVING A "NEW" INCLINE 230 FT N OF THE "OLD" INCLINE, 500 FT DOWN DIP FROM THE OUTCROP, THENCE 500 FT N AND 200FT S DRIFTING IN QUARTZ BRECCIA WITH MINOR MINERALIZATION. BEAR CREEK MINING CO BEGAN EXPLORATION IN 1967, STAKING AN ADDITIONAL 26 "ALTA" CLAIMS AROUND JOHNSTON'S CLAIMS. HOMESTAKE BEGAN EXPLORATION HERE IN 1968, FOLLOWED BY WESTERN VENTURES IN 1969 AND CORDILLERAN EXPLORATION IN THE EARLY 1970'S.

Comment (Geology): VEIN IS 3-15 FT. THICK. WIDTHS GREATER THAN 2 FEET CONTAIN 2-29 OZ AG .24 OZ AU, AND 1-6% CU. ORE UP TO 40 FEET WIDE, AVERAGED 4 FEET. ORE IS VERY FINED GRAINED QUARTZ WITH DISSEMINATED ORE MINERALS.

Comment (Deposit): CHALCOPYRITE AND FE-OXIDES. SEVERAL FRAGMENTS DISPLAY EARLY STAGE VITREOUS QUARTZ VEINLETS. THE BRECCIA ITSELF IS COMMONLY CROSSCUT BY LATE-STAGE OPEN-CENTERED FISSURE VEINS. THE BRECCIA ITSELF IS COMMONLY CROSSCUT BY LATESTAGE OPEN-CENTERED FISSURE VEINS. THE ROCKS EXPOSED IN THE TRENCHES ABOVE THE PROSPECTS ARE ALTERED PINK-GREY, RHYOLITE ASH-FLOW TUFF. WITHIN THE TRENCH, THE ROCKS ARE BLEACHED, ARGILLIZED (KAOLINIZED?) AND SHEARED. THE ROCKS ARE HYDROTHERMALLY ALTERED TO BRIGHT RED, YELLOW, AND ORANGE COLORS AT THE NW END OF THE TRENCH. THEY ARE CLAY-ALTERED AND SHOW CALCITE AND CLAY VEINING. NUMEROUS GOUGE ZONES. SAMPLE 1701 WAS FROM THE MINE DUMP AND SAMPLE 1702 WAS TAKEN FROM A ROADCUT EXPOSURE OF ALTERED VOLCANICS.

Comment (Workings): VEIN DEVELOPED BY 2 INCLINED SHAFTS, SEVERAL PROSPECT PITS, AND SHORT DRIFTS. IN 1983, 3-4 NE-TRENDING PROSPECTS 3-7 YEARS OLD, OF SMALL EXTENT AND MOSTLY CAVED, 2 BULLDOZER CUTS ABOVE ADITS; CUTS TREND NW-SE. FAIRLY RECENT TRENCHING AND BULLDOZING IN VICINITY OF PROSPECTS, MAIN ORE SHOOT MINED 450 FT DOWN DIP.. IN 1983, 3-4 NE-TRENDING PROSPECTS 3-7 YEARS OLD, OF SMALL EXTENT AND MOSTLY CAVED, 2 BULLDOZER CUTS ABOVE ADITS; CUTS TREND NW-SE. FAIRLY RECENT TRENCHING AND BULLDOZING IN VICINITY OF PROSPECTS, MAIN ORE SHOOT MINED 450 FT DOWN DIP.

Nevada has a total of 368 distinct gold districts. Of the of those, just 36 are major producers with production and/or reserves of over 1,000,000 ounces, 49 have production and/or reserves of over 100,000 ounces, with the rest having less than 100,000 ounces. Read more: Gold Districts of Nevada.
