Comment (Deposit): 1863-SILVER WAS DISCOVERED IN GALENA CANYON; 1864; COPPER & SILVER WERE DISCOVERED IN COPPER CANYON; FIRST PRODUCTION WAS IN 1868. MINING CONTINUED THROUGH 1875 WITH ORE BEING SHIPPED TO SMELTERS IN SWANSEA, WALES. DECLINE FROM 1875 TO TURN OF CENTURY. 1909-GOLD WAS DISCOVERED IN PHILADELPHIA CANYON, PROMPTING A REJUVENATION OF THE DISTRICT. 1916-FORMATION OF COPPER CANYON MINING CO. WHICH HAD LARGE PRODUCTION OF COPPER FROM BOTH COPPER CANYON AND COPPER BASIN DURING WORLD WAR I. THERE WAS INTERMITTENT PRODUCTION UNTIL WORLD WAR II WHEN THERE WAS ANOTHER PRODUCTION BOOM UNDER LEASE TO INT. SMELTING AND REFINING CO. AS ARCO DID EXPLORATION WORK IN THE DISTRICT FROM 1959 TO 1961 WHEN DUVAL ACQUIRED IT AND CONTINUED EXPLORATION CULMINATING IN THE OPENING OF BOTH COPPER CANYON AND COPPER BASIN OPEN PIT MINES IN 1967, BY WHICH BATTLE MOUNTAIN BECAME ONE OF NEVADA'S LARGEST COPPER PRODUCERS. IN 1977, BECAUSE OF DEPRESSED CU MARKET, DUVAL ANNOUNCED PLANS TO PHASE OUT CU PRODUCTION IN

Comment (Development): NO ACTIVITY AT TIME OF EXAMINATION IN 1984, BUT IT WAS REPORTED TO HAVE OPERATED IN 1983, AND WAS LISTED AS AN ACTIVE UNERGROUND GOLD MINE EMPLOYING 5 PERSONS IN 1983.

Comment (Geology): GARNET-DIOPSIDE-TREMOLITE-ACTINOLITE SKARN ASSOC WITH ORE IN SOME OREBODIES.

Comment (Deposit): MILKY QUARTZ VEIN MATTER OCCURS IN AN APPROXIMATE 25 CM WIDE VEIN CUTTING MICROGRANODIORITE. THE VEIN MATERIAL IS OXIDIZED; ONLY LIMONITE OCCURS IN CLOTS AND VUGS. MICROGRANODIORITE IS LOCALLY ARGILLIZED. HORNFELS-GRANODIORITE CONTACT IS QUITE NEAR THE VEIN, AND HORNFELS MAY FORM THE WALLROCK LOCALLY.
