Little Man Mine

The Little Man Mine is a uranium mine located in Carbon county, Wyoming.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Land Status

Land ownership: BLM Administrative Area
Note: the land ownership field only identifies whether the area the mine is in is generally on public lands like Forest Service or BLM land, or if it is in an area that is generally private property. It does not definitively identify property status, nor does it indicate claim status or whether an area is open to prospecting. Always respect private property.

Comments

Comment (Production): A small shipment of uranium ore was made from this mine in 1954. (Bull. 50, p. 210)

Comment (Ownership): Group of 12 unpatented claims owned by J.D. Bedford, E.E. Lepponen, R. Rimmer, T. Rimmer, R. Lee, M. Lee, A.J. Pascoe, J. Kladianos, D. Freeman, S.W., Freeman, and F.J. Reade, all of Hanna WY. (p. 48 of 91 of DMEA-3587)

Comment (Reference): US AEC PRELIM FIELD INV-AIRBORNE RA ANOMALIES [sic. from deleted record 10303561 = 0560070173)

Comment (Geology): chalcopyrite copied from delted record 10008504 (MRDS D000710)

Comment (Deposit): Record in the AEC RME-3125 is very sketchy. It simply lists minerals identified on the property as uraninite, uranophane, pyrite, molybdenite, and "graphite in schistose rock".

Comment (Deposit): Seems odd to have both molybdenum and graphite in the same rock. Is this a case of not being able to differentiate the two similar-looking minerals or do both actually exist in the rock. If only one, which one? [A.B. Wilson, 24 June, 2010]

Comment (Geology): Bull. 50 describes mineralogy: "Yellow uranium minerals including kasolite occur along fractures and are disseminated through weathered granite within 4 to 6 ft. of the graphite bed. The quartzite is less mineralized. Below the weathered zone, the bluish-gray unweathered granite contains disseminated uraninite, moybdenite, and pyrite. Other minerals identififed are uranophane, chalcopyrite, and galena."

Comment (Identification): Map on p. 91 odf 91 of DMEA-3587 shows unpatented mining claims 1-12.

Comment (Geology): lower adit was driven at an early date to explore a graphite zone. Uranophane was reported in the oxide zone by the applicant (but not observed by the USBM examiners). Pitchblende was found in upper adit. (DMEA-3587, p. 50 of 91)

Comment (Economic Factors): This is one of a very few prospects that was granted DMEA assistance.
