Comment (Geology): GEOL.DESC: MANGANESE ORE OCCURS IN SERIES OF STUMPY LENSES OF METACHERT, CUT BY QUARTZ VEINS AND ENCLOSED IN PHYLLITE OR SERICITE SCHIST OF THE CALAVERAS SERIES. ORE BODIES APPEAR TO BE SEPARATE LENSES. STRIKE VARIES FROM N 15 TO 55 W, THE DIP IS 75 E TO VERTICAL. ORE CONSISTS OF MANGANESE OXIDES DERIVED PARTLY FROM SPESSARTITE AND PARTLY FROM PINK RHODONITE. GARNET PRODUCES CRUMBLY BROWNISH-BLACK ORE, AND RHODONITE FORMED FAIRLY HIGH GRADE BLACK OXIDE OF NODULAR AND BOTRYOIDAL PSILOMELANE AND PYROLUSITE. RHODONITE CRYSTALS ARE UP TO 1 INCH IN LENGTH.
