Amax Great Salt Lake

The Amax Great Salt Lake is a chlorine and magnesite mine located in Tooele county, Utah at an elevation of 4,226 feet.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Land Status

Land ownership: State
Note: the land ownership field only identifies whether the area the mine is in is generally on public lands like Forest Service or BLM land, or if it is in an area that is generally private property. It does not definitively identify property status, nor does it indicate claim status or whether an area is open to prospecting. Always respect private property.

Comments

Comment (Exploration): "OTHER GEOCHEMICAL" INDICATES EXTENSIVE CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF THE LAKE BRINE.

Comment (Geology): "LIMESTONE" IS ACTUALLY OOLITIC SANDS.

Comment (Geology): THE FIRST GEOMETRY DATA SET REFERS TO THE EXTENSIVE DEPOSITS OF OOLITTC SANDS FOUND AROUND AND UNDER THE GREAT SALT LAKE.

Comment (Reserve-Resource): K AND LI ARE REPORTED AS OXIDES, ALTHOUGH THEY EXIST AS IONS IN THE LAKE BRINES. K2O AND LI2O ARE STANDARD ASSAY FORMULAS UNIVERSALLY ADOPTED BY THE POTASH AND LITHIUM-FROM-BRINE INDUSTRIES.

Comment (Reserve-Resource): THE FIRST COMPLETE INTERMOUNTAIN FIELD OPERATIONS CENTER (IFOC) EVALUATION OF THIS PROPERTY WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING FY 1983. THE UPDATE WAS DONE IN OCTOBER 1987. GRADE IS MG CONTAINED IN SOLAR PONDS. GRADE OF MG IN LAKE IS 0.4%. PLANT PRODUCES APPROXIMATELY 34,500 MTPY MG METAL AND 103,500 MTPY OF CHLORINE. (PAYDIRT MAGAZINE, ROCKY MT EDITION. APRIL 1993, P. 8A).

Comment (Production): K AND LI ARE REPORTED AS OXIDES, ALTHOUGH THEY EXIST AS IONS IN THE LAKE BRINES. K2O AND LI2O ARE STANDARD ASSAY FORMULAS UNIVERSALLY ADOPTED BY THE POTASH AND LITHIUM-FROM-BRINE INDUSTRIES. CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS PRODUCED ON SITE BY REACTING OOLITIC SANDS, WHICH ARE VERY COMMON IN AND AROUND THE GREAT SALT LAKE, WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID, WHICH IS PRODUCED IN THE MELT AND REACTOR CELLS. MINING OF THE SANDS IS LOW COST, WITH ONE FRONT END LOADER BEING USED PART-TIME TO PROVIDE OOLITIC SANDS FROM SEVERAL SURFACE SITES AROUND THE PLANT. THE SANDS ARE BALL-MILLED, PLACED INTO A REACTOR VESSEL, CONTACTED WITH HCL, ALLOWED TO "DIGEST" IN ANOTHER TANK, THICKENED, AND SHIPPED OR USED ON-SITE FOR ACID NEUTRALIZATION AND FOR DESULFURI- ZATION. NO DATA ARE AVAILABLE ON THE AMOUNT OF CACL2 PRODUCED OR SHIPPED. THE BUREAU OF MINES DOES NOT MAINTAIN PRODUCTION DATA ON NON-NATURAL CACL2 PRODUCTION. AMAX PRODUCES ABOUT 51000 METRIC TONS OF CHLORINE A YEAR, WITH 18000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR BEING SHIPPED AND USED IN THE YIELD AND OUTPUT CALCULATIONS OF THIS STUDY. THE EXACT RECOVERY AND GRADE USED TO CALCULATE CHLORINE OUTPUT ARE PROVIDED IN SECTION B4 OF THE APPENDIX ACCOMPANYING THE REPORT.

Comment (Deposit): THE FIRST COMPLETE INTERMOUNTAIN FIELD OPERATIONS CENTER (IFOC) EVALUATION OF THIS PROPERTY WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING FY 1983. THE UPDATE WAS DONE OCTOBER 1987.
