Red Mountain

The Red Mountain is a chromium mine located in Alaska.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Geology): Age = Holocene.

Comment (Reference): Primary Reference = Berryhill, 1963

Comment (Geology): Geologic Description = Berryhill (1963, sample locality 44) collected a shovel sample of surface materials at this location and determined that the heavy mineral concentrates contained small amounts of chromite (1 to 10 percent) and traces of Pt and Au. Augite, hornblende, and olivine were reported to be present in amounts exceeding 10 percent. This occurrence is on the steeper part of the west flank of Red Mountain, a composite ultramafic pluton containing abundant dunite. The surface materials at this site are expected to be mostly colluvial and to have been derived directly from erosion of the Red Mountain pluton.

Comment (Workings): Workings / Exploration = No workings are present.

Comment (Deposit): Model Name = Placer PGE-Au (Cox and Singer, 1986; model 39b)

Comment (Exploration): Status = Active
