MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Note: the land ownership field only identifies whether the area the mine is in is generally on public lands like Forest Service or BLM land, or if it is in an area that is generally private property. It does not definitively identify property status, nor does it indicate claim status or whether an area is open to prospecting. Always respect private property.

Comments
Comment (Identification): Material from MRDS record No. M243115 and MRDS record No. M231027 has been copied to this record. This record supersedes records M243115 and M231027.
Comment (Location): The mine area is located just south of Highway 50 at Sand Springs Pass.
Comment (Workings): EXTENSIVE UNDERGROUND WORKINGS EXTEND TO A DEPTH OF 450 FT, SERVICED BY 3 SHAFTS, A CYANIDE MILL (RUINS REMAIN); AND MORE RECENTLY, HEAP LEACH
Comment (Development): The property was developed from 1912 to present with sporadic production. The property lay idle after discovery in 1905 until 1912 when Leslie L. Leonard prospected it with good results, after which he and C.W. Kinney jointly sunk a 130-ft shaft and found the 8-ft vein carrying mill-grade ore all the way down with a payshoot dipping westerly. In 1919 the Martin brothers took a lease and bond on the property, sunk several more shafts and shipped 150 tons of $125-$300/t ore. They also opened several parallel veins containing rich pockets of cerargyrite ore. In 1923, channel samples over 3000 ft along the deposit by a N.Y. firm, averaged $15.80/ton in gold. In 1924 the mine was purchased by Senator N.H. Getchell who incorporated the property as the Dan Tucker Mining Co., who worked it and found 4 new 3-ft ore shoot. In 1927, the mine was said to be worked by lessees. In 1934, after several years idle the mine, under lease to Rosetta Mines Co. became active again. Some production was reported from the district in 1938 and 1940. The mine was owned and operated by Summit King mines, Ltd.in 1951. In 1985, Capri Resources Ltd. reported commencement of a major bulk sampling and 7-hole diamond drilling program on the Summit King property, fully funded by Tri-Basin Resources Ltd, who may earn up to a 50% interest in the property.
Comment (Economic Factors): In 1939, reserves were reported as 15 Mt, assaying $3.50-4.50 per ton. Production from the mine in 1919 totalled 3 car loads of ore assaying $215-300 per ton; in 1927 1 Kt ore was produced; in 1940-41 and 1946-51 production totalled 20,895 oz Au and 1,262,255 oz Ag. There has probably been more unreported production from this property.
Comment (Deposit): The mine area consists of a system of E-W veins in a shear zone that crosses the range. Veins cut Mesozoc and Tertiary metamorphic and volcanic rocks and andesite and rhyolite dikes that occupy many of the fault strands. Near the surface, the veins have a braided pattern and range in thickness from 2 to 10 ft. Veins consist of vuggy, fine-grained quartz, angular fault breccia, and locally abundant pyrite and calcite. Ore is mainly free-gold, cerargyrite, and argentite. Silver values reportedly increase with depth. Sample 3953 was collected from a shaft at the east end of the vein system, and consists of vuggy, iron-stained quartz and sericite without visible mineralization.
Comment (Commodity): Ore Materials: GOLD, CERARGYRITE, ARGENTITE
Comment (Commodity): Gangue Materials: QUARTZ, SERICITE, PYRITE, CALCITE, IRON OXIDES

Nevada Gold
Nevada has a total of 368 distinct gold districts. Of the of those, just 36 are major producers with production and/or reserves of over 1,000,000 ounces, 49 have production and/or reserves of over 100,000 ounces, with the rest having less than 100,000 ounces. Read more: Gold Districts of Nevada.
