Elwood History
Elwood was an early transportation hub for the Encampment district. Not many details are available for this short-lived town. Elwood had a post office from 1900 to 1904.
During the summer the was busy with ore wagons traveling between the copper mines of the district and the town of Encampment. In the winter when heavy snows blocked the roads, ore was transported on sleds to Elwood where it was transferred to ore wagons.
Once the Southern Wyoming Tramway was completed in 1902, freight traffic through Elwood was significantly diminished and the town died out within a couple years.
