Bi-Metallic shaft house at Granite, Montana ca. 1890-1892
This ca. 1890-1892 photo of the Bi-Metallic shaft house at the Granite district in Montana was provided by Larry Hoffman, with the following description attached:
This is ca. 1890-92 after the consolidation and has a myriad of interesting details.
The Granite company's A & B mills are on the left, obviously abandoned, with a roof caved in on "B" and windows out. Mill "C" was built at Rumsey to the south. The tall tower on the roof of "A" mill was a head tank to maintain steady water pressure to the jigs in the mill.
The dump of the McLure tunnel, where the discovery was made, is above the 4 stacks of the Bi-Metallic hoist boilers. The Granite Mount shaft behind it. Above the GM is the enclosed water tank for the mills, with the flume coming in from the right.
Right of the roof peak are the stacks for the GM hoist boiler plant. To the right is the gravity tram that took ore hoisted up the GM and took it down to the head house of the tramway to the Bi-Metallic mill at Kirkville (or Clark), state-of-the-art. The B-M shaft house was rebuilt in the image of the GM, with a new hoist and Sterling boilers, fed by chain stokers. The steam hoist was replaced by an electric hoist in 1902-3. The overflow tail race from the mill tank can be seen to the right of the tramway.
