In this view is the Gregory Lode and what was previously the community of Mountain City. Mountain City was established in 1859 between Black Hawk and Central City, but was later absorbed by Central City.

Described in 1869: :Roworth & Co. is the largest grocery house in the mountain towns, and do a business to the amount of $200,000 yearly, largely supplying the home retail trade as well as traders in all the mountain settlements. Hon. W. M. Roworth, the founder of this house in 1860, commenced here with less than a wagon load of goods; has now retired with a competency, and is serving his second term as Mayor of the city."
