Comments

Comment (Location): AT SOUTH BASE OF SHEEPSHEAD NORTH OF ASIATIC CREEK AND LAKE DE NOLDA, 1.9 MILES SW OF LOOKOUT MTN. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :1975

Comment (Deposit): POST-SUMMITVILLE-COLLAPSE IGNEOUS ACTIVITY INCLUDES EMPLACEMENT OF ALAMOSA RIVER MONZONITE STOCK ALONG SOUTH BOUNDING CORNWALL RING FAULT AND LOCAL VOLCANIC VENTS--SHEEPSHEAD, LOOKOUT MTN, ELEPHANT MTN. SHEEPSHEAD QUARTZ LATITE PORPHYRY VENT APPEARS TO HAVE OPENED ON WEST WALL OF PLATORO CALDERA, ASCENDING THROUGH TREASURE MTN TUFF EITHER ON OR JUST OUTSIDE CALDERA AND THROUGH UPPER SUMMITVILLE ANDESITE. MINERALIZATION COULD HAVE BEEN FOUND IN ALTERED RADIAL FRACTURE OR ALONG QUARTZ LATITE OR ANDESITE PORPHYRY DIKE. CALKIN (1967) DESCRIBES VENT-DOME COMPLEXES AS CONSISTING OF LOWER FRIABLE AGGLOMERATIC TUFF (QUARTZ LATITE AND VITROPHYRE), MIDDLE BLACK VITROPHYRE INTERMIXED AND INTERCALATED WITH UPPER QUARTZ LATITE CORE. CALKIN MAPS NW-TRENDING FAULT EXTENDING DOWN GULCH FROM JUST WEST OF SHEEPSHEAD. TUNNEL PROBABLY PASSES THROUGH PROGRESSIVELY SOLFATARIC ALTERED ROCKS, FROM OUTER PROPYLITIC ZONE THROUGH ARGILLIC ZONE INTO QUARTZ-ALUNITE ZONE ADJACENT TO VENT.

Comment (Workings): ONE TUNNEL DRIVEN N 15 W FOR 1300 FT
