MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Location): ON WEST SLOPE OF LOOKOUT MTN ABOVE IRON CREEK, 0.6 MILE SW OF LOOKOUT MTN. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :1975

Comment (Deposit): POST-SUMMITVILLE-COLLAPSE IGNEOUS ACTIVITY INCLUDES EMPLACEMENT OF ALAMOSA RIVER MONZONITE STOCK ALONG SOUTH BOUNDING CORNWALL RING FAULT AND LOCAL VOLCANIC VENTS AT SHEEPSHEAD, LOOKOUT MTN, AND ELEPHANT MTN. CALKIN (1967) DESCRIBES VENT-DOME COMPLEXES AS CONSISTING OF LOWER FRIABLE AGGLOMERATIC TUFF (QUARTZ LATITE AND VITROPHYRE), MIDDLE BLACK VITROPHYRE INTERMIXED AND INTERCALATED WITH UPPER QUARTZ LATITE CORE. MINERALIZATION FOUND ON ARLA VEIN MAY HAVE BEEN ALTERED RADIAL FRACTURE OR QUARTZ LATITE PORPHYRY DIKE. FIRST SECTION OF TUNNEL PROBABLY PASSES THROUGH PROGRESSIVELY ALTERED ROCKS, FROM OUTER PROPYLITIC ZONE THROUGH ARGILLIC ZONE AND INTO QUARTZ-ALUNITE ZONE ADJACENT VENT. BEND IN TUNNEL COULD REFLECT INTERSECTION WITH UNALTERED VENT FACIES AT DEPTH. MINE DISCHARGE WATER NOTED TO CONTAIN FE SULFATE AND ARSENIC, POSSIBLY INDICATING AURIFEROUS SULFIDE MINERALIZATION.

Comment (Workings): TUNNEL DRIVEN N 85 W FOR 2500 FT, THENCE 1100 FT AT N 50 W, AS REPORTED BY PATTON (1917) AND CALKIN (1967), BUT GOW AND YANG (1914) REPORT TUNNEL HEADING N 50 E AFTER BEND.

Comment (Development): AU DISCOVERED IN ARLA VEIN IN 1897, TUNNEL STARTED 600 FT BELOW APEX OF VEIN. WORKINGS APPARENTLY CLOSED BY 1913 DUE TO BAD AIR.
