Titan Mine

The Titan Mine is a vermiculite mine located in Gunnison county, Colorado at an elevation of 8,419 feet.

About the MRDS Data:

All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

Satelite View

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Production): EXACT FIGURES FOR THESE YEARS ARE UNKNOWN BUT PRODUCTION IS CONSIDERED SMALL.

Comment (Development): CLAIMS PROBABLY SURVEYED ORIGINALLY AS METAL PROSPECTS IN 1886 BY JOHN J. COOKE AND OTHERS. TITANIUM PROSPECTS IN AREA DEVELOPED AS AABERITE MINES IN 1953 BY TITANIUM ACTYMITE CORP. TITAN PINNACLE PRODUCED SMALL AMOUNTS OF VERMICULITE IN 1958, 1959, AND 1961; EXPLORATION, DEVELOPMENT, AND SAMPLING FOR VERMICULITE FOLLOWED IN 1963 AND 1965.

Comment (Deposit): AT NW END OF IRON HILL COMPLEX, PYROXENITE HAS INTRUDED OLDER POWDERHORN GRANITE STOCK AND SOUTHERN EDGE OF DUBOIS GREENSTONE BELT. HEDLUND AND OLSON (1975) MAPPED SEVERAL MAGNETITE-ILMENITE-PEROVSKITE DIKES AND SEGREGATIONS IN PYROXENITE IN IMMEDIATE AREA. VERMICULITE IS SPORADIC BUT LOCALLY ABUNDANT IN ALTERED PYROXENITE AS PODLIKE SEGREGATIONS AND DIKELIKE BODIES, RESULTING FROM WEATHERING OF BIOTITE AND/OR PHLOGOPITE.

Comment (Workings): MOSTLY OPEN CUTS; POSSIBLY SOME OLDER UNDERGROUND WORKINGS, EXTENT UNKNOWN

Comment (Location): EXACT LOCATION UNCERTAIN BUT WAS DESCRIBED AS AT HEAD OF STONE GULCH. ELEV AND LAT-LONG GIVEN ARE FOR PROSPECTS ON SE SIDE OF GULCH ON PATENTED CLAIMS. ; INFO FROM LAND.ST :1976
