MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments
Comment (Production): PRODUCTION ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT $4,000,000 FROM 1866-1906. SPORODIC LEASING FROM 1920-1938 WHEN ALL MINING CEASED. IN 1956-58 THE COMANCHE MINE PRODUCED MN.
Comment (Deposit): COMANCHE MINE ACTIVE 1956-58, FOR MNO2, JUBILEE WORKINGS INTERSECT ON TUNNEL LEVEL NEAR TOP OF GOLDEN GATE INCLINEAND AT WHITEWASH STATION; FIELD SHAFT INTERSECTS THE JUBILEE WORKINGS 500 FT S 73 E FROM THE TOP OF GOLDEN GATE INCLINE; CUNO SHAFT IS ABOUT 750 FT S 28 W OF THE PORTER SHAFT; TAKE ALL INCLINE IS ABOUT 200FT S 28 W OF THE HOPE DISCOVERY INCLINE; PORTER SHAFT INACCESSIBLE, PRINCE IMPERIALE SHAFT WAS USED; LITTLE EMMA IS ABOUT 700FT NE OF DISCOVERY SHAFT, NEAR TOP OF HOPE HILL; ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT
Comment (Deposit): Merged data from Deposit ID 10196506 (Hope Group)
Comment (Deposit): THE BEDS AND THE VEINS AT THE HOPE MINE STRIKE N 10-60 E AND DIP ABOUT 30 NW BUT BOTH ARE VARIABLE. SOME OF THE LARGEST ORE BODIES OCCUR ON THE CREST OF SMALL ANTICLINES OR IN THE SADDLES OF SMALL SYNCLINES. VEINS OCCUR AT SEVERAL HORIZONS AND SOME ARE CONNECTED BY THIN STRINGERS THAT PARALLEL THE W-STRIKING DEEPLY DIPPING VEINS TO THE S. THE MAJOR VEINS ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS THAT ARE SEPARATED BY A 400-FT INTERVAL OF BARREN ROCK.
Comment (Workings): DEPOSIT CONSISTS OF TWO MAJOR VEINS, CALLED THE NORTH AND SOUTH ORE CHANNELS. NORTH CHANNEL DEVELOPED BY SHAPLEIGH, PORTER, PORTER MAIN, AND PORTER #2 SHAFTS OVER A LENGTH OF 1400 M AND WIDTH OF 30 M. SOUTH CHANNEL DEVELOPED BY SHAPLEIGH, FIELD, AND CUNO SHAFTS OVER A LENGTH OF 800 M AND A WIDTH OF 80 M. JUBILEE TUNNEL ENTERS WEST SLOPE OF HOPE HILL AT ABOUT 5500 FT ELEVATION AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN 165 M EASTWARD WHERE IT INTERSECTS THE SHAPLEIGH SHAFT WHICH IS COLLARED AT AN ELEVATION OF 5670 FT. SHAPLEIGH SHAFT IS ROUGHLY BETWEEN AND ABOUT 120 M WEST OF THE TWO NORTHEAST TRENDING ORE CHANNELS. WORKINGS HAVE BEEN INACCESSIBLE SINCE 1941 WHEN SHAPLEIGH SHAFT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE.
Comment (Geology): MINE ON CREST AND WEST LIMB OF PHILIPSBURG ANTICLINE WHICH TRENDS ABOUT N 20 E AND PITCHES ABOUT 15 N
Comment (Reserve-Resource): DRILLING BY USBM FAILED TO PENETRATE COMMERCIAL ORE IN CAMBRIAN LIMESTONES BENEATH HOPE WORKINGS BUT THIS WAS NOT SURPRISING AS HOPE MINERALIZATION IS NOT RELATED TO STRONG EAST-WEST FISSURES BUT TO BEDDING PLANES AND POORLY DEVELOPED FRACTURES IN JEFFERSON LIMESTONE. THE FACT THAT SOME METAL VALUES WERE FOUND AT FORMATION CONTACTS INDICATES THAT THE ENTIRE PHILIPSBURG ANTICLINE HAS BEEN MINERALIZED TO SOME DEGREE. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT SOME SMALL LOW GRADE ORE BODIES MAY BE DISCOVERED TO THE NORTHEAST ALONG BROWNS CREEK BUT THESE RESOURCES WOULD NOT BE CREDITED TO THE HOPE MINE. MINERAL POTENTIAL DOWNDIP OF THE PHILIPSBURG ANTICLINE IN THE JEFFERSON LIMESTONE IS UNFAVORABLE BECAUSE NO FAULT OR FRACTURE SYSTEMS ARE MAPPED. EVEN A WEAKLY DEVELOPED FRACTURE SYSTEM, IF IT COULD BE LOCATED, WOULD GREATLY INCREASE MINERAL POTENTIAL.

Principal Gold Districts of Montana
In Montana, 54 mining districts have each have produced more than 10,000 ounces of gold. The largest producers are Butte, Helena, Marysville, and Virginia City, each having produced more than one million ounces. Twenty seven other districts are each credited with between 100,000 and one million ounces of gold production. Read more: Principal Gold Districts of Montana.
