The Benbow Mine is a chromium mine located in Stillwater county, Montana at an elevation of 8,448 feet.
About the MRDS Data:
All mine locations were obtained from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System. The locations and other information in this database have not been verified for accuracy. It should be assumed that all mines are on private property.

MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Land ownership: National Forest
Note: the land ownership field only identifies whether the area the mine is in is generally on public lands like Forest Service or BLM land, or if it is in an area that is generally private property. It does not definitively identify property status, nor does it indicate claim status or whether an area is open to prospecting. Always respect private property.

Comment (Production): FROM 1941 TO 1943, THE ANACONDA CO. HAD MINED FROM BENBOW 203800 MT OF ORE AND MILLED 169170 MT TO PRODUCE 65831 MT OF CONCENTRATE AVERAGING 41.5 PERCENT CR2O3. PRODUCTION WAS HALTED BY GOVERNMENT ORDER AS HIGHER-GRADE, FOREIGN CHROMITE ORES BECAME AVAILABLE.
Comment (Names): PART OF STILLWATER COMPLEX.
Comment (Reserve-Resource): THE MAS RESOURCE MATRIX ONE IS PREDICATED ON BUREAU OF MINES MEASUREMENTS OF ORE BLOCKS DEVELOPED BY THE ANACONDA MINING CO. IN 1941-1943. THE MEASURED AND INDICATED(DEMON- STRATED) ORE CATEGORIES WERE INCREASED TO INCLUDE ALL ORE ABOVE THE PROPOSED NO. 6 LEVEL AT WEST BENBOW AND ABOVE 8,100 FEET (2,469 M) ELEVATION AT EAST BENBOW. ADDITIONAL IDENTIFIED ORE WAS INFERRED TO 7,100 FEET (2,164 M) ELE- VATION, THE LOWEST CHROMITE SURFACE EXPOSURE ON THE MOUAT PROPERTY. A POTENTIAL RESOURCE UNDER CENTRAL BENBOW WAS NOT ESTIMATED, AS A LARGE SHEAR ZONE EXISTS, RESULTING IN MAJOR DILUTION AND GROUND SUPPORT PROBLEMS. THE ORE GRADE WAS DETERMINED BY UNDERGROUND SAMPLING AND VOLUME AVERAGING AND DOES NOT COMPENSATE FOR DILUTION. MINE RUN ORE IS ESTIMATED AT 22.0 PERCENT CR2O3. CR:FE RATIO AVERAGES 1.72:1.

Principal Gold Districts of Montana
In Montana, 54 mining districts have each have produced more than 10,000 ounces of gold. The largest producers are Butte, Helena, Marysville, and Virginia City, each having produced more than one million ounces. Twenty seven other districts are each credited with between 100,000 and one million ounces of gold production. Read more: Principal Gold Districts of Montana.
