MRDS mine locations are often very general, and in some cases are incorrect. Some mine remains have been covered or removed by modern industrial activity or by development of things like housing. The satellite view offers a quick glimpse as to whether the MRDS location corresponds to visible mine remains.

Comments

Comment (Production): About 2/3 to 3/4 of Alma district production has come from the London mine area. The mine operated continuously from 1875 to 1942; after World War II, operations were intermittent through 1989. Production totals from 1901 to 1931 are: gold, 263,173 oz., silver, 237,178 oz., lead, 5.88 million lb., and copper, 165,000 lb.; in addition, substantial production occurred before 1901 and after 1931. Total gold production is probably around 1 million oz.

Comment (Reserve-Resource): A 1988 estimate stated that 1 million tons of material graded 0.27 oz/ton of gold. (USGS OFR 98-206)

Comment (Location): The London Mine is on London Mountain, about 5 miles west of Alma, in secs. 7 and 18, T 9 S, R 78 W, and secs. 1 and 12, T 9 S, R 79 W.

Comment (Development): THE LONDON MINE HAD BEEN WORKED BETWEEN 1875 AND THE 1940'S. REOPENED IN 1988 AFTER A DECADE OF REHABILITATION, EXPLORATION, AND DEVELOPMENT OF ORE RESERVES. IT CLOSED DOWN AGAIN IN JUNE 1989 BECAUSE OF LACK OF ECONOMICALLY RECOVERABLE ORE AND THE CONTINUED LOW PRICE OF ORE.

Comment (Geology): Gold-quartz veins in faults in porphyry sills in the lower Weber(?) formation in the footwall adjacent to the London reverse fault.
