Mine Description
The Oro Belle and Gray Eagle mine and mill, on the southern slopes of Wasson Peak, at an elevation of 5,400 feet, are accessible by road from the Tiger mine.
The Oro Belle and Gray Eagle were worked to some extent during the early days and from 1900 to 1912, with a total estimated production of $700,000. From 1907 to 1909, inclusive, according to Weeds' Mines Handbook, the yield was 5,662 ounces of gold, 16,301 ounces of silver and 23,830 pounds of copper. Some work is reported to have been done in 1915 and 1916. The prevailing rock is highly metamorphosed sedimentary schist, intruded by fine-grained granite dikes.
The Oro Belle vein is reported to be small. It was worked, mainly by lessees, through eight tunnels, of which the longest extends 1,000 feet.
The Gray Eagle vein is opened by a 600-foot shaft about 14 mile north of the mill. It is near the schist-granite contact, and the foot wall is in pegmatite. This vein is said to be from 2 to 15 feet wide. Its ore is reported to have carried one per cent of copper, one ounce of gold, and 2 ounces of silver per ton.
