Ash History

The settlement that grew around the Bachelor mine was known as Bachelor, though the post office established there was named Ash. The mine thrived in the late 1890s, and the community received its post office in 1899. However, as the high-grade ore was depleted and the mine reduced its workforce, the town began to decline, leading to the post office's closure in 1905. Despite this, the settlement was not completely abandoned.

In 1927 the Syracuse Tunnel was completed about a mile down the hill. This became the main portal for the mine so many of the workers now lived at the tunnel, further diminishing the settlement of Ash. In 1928 a flood destroyed what was left of the town, and it was never rebuilt.
