Gold has been produced in the Modoc lead-silver district, which is in southern Inyo County at the north end of the Argus Range and about 10 miles east of Darwin. The small mines and prospects here have been idle for some time. The deposits consist of narrow quartz veins containing free gold, pyrite, galena. and chalcopyrite. They occur in granitic rocks and schist.
